If you’ve had time to read through the instructions, some of you might be wondering why a special trowel is required for installing Lauzon NextStep engineered flooring with Lauzon NextGrip or Lauzon NextBond adhesives. Here’s a simple explanation.

Historically, adhesive manufacturers know that their glues will be used on a wide variety of flooring products.

To simplify the distribution and use of their products, their trowel recommendations were made based on two factors:

- the least-flexible popular flooring product in distribution
– the most-available trowels on the market

As a result, the trowel recommended by most major adhesive manufacturers is rarely the one that is most appropriate for a given type of flooring. More often than not, the size of the teeth are too large, resulting in wasted adhesive in the best case, or defective installation in the worst, given that it is either too flexible or takes too long to dry.

Square1/4’’ x 1/8″ x 1/4’’ teeth may seem too small for many installers, but the superior flexibility of NextStep wood strips needs to be taken into consideration. And if proper installation requires square teeth, it’s to ensure constant application. In fact, “V” shaped teeth wear out very quickly, as all the pressure is concentrated on the tip of the “V”.

TIP: Don’t forget to regularly measure the depth of the teeth and to immediately change your trowel once you’ve noticed a decrease in length!
